We’re about twenty humans living in a big, character-filled estate house built in 1871, in the city centre. After the 2020 lockdown, we took over the space with the goal of creating a home that feels meaningful and built on connection, care, and shared purpose.
Our community spans 11 nationalities and several languages. Between us, we’ve got outdoor guides, landscapers, teachers, circus artists, engineers, musicians, and community organisers, plus a few who defy easy description. What ties us together is a shared curiosity about how to live well with others, with a sense of humour, openness to personal growth, and enough self-awareness to know that we’re all still figuring it out. Community isn’t something that just happens; it’s something we build together. It takes care, communication, and a willingness to stretch, and in return, it offers a rare kind of richness and connection.
We’re a mix of personalities and paces. You can catch a gaggle of us out climbing, skiing, or tramping on weekends, reading in the park, or deep in conversation over tea. There’s usually something happening - a jam session, a games night, crafter-noons, contact improv, queer watch parties, a spontaneous kitchen dance party - balanced by calm and space when you need it.
Food is an integral way we stay connected. We share between four and six vegan or vegetarian with vegan-option meals a week, cooked in small teams. It’s a low-pressure way to keep the house humming and make sure everyone gets fed and cared for.
We value good communication, consent, and kindness - the everyday kind that shows up in dishes done, conversations had, and people looking out for each other. We make decisions collectively and try to hold the balance between independence and connection.
If you believe that community takes effort but gives back tenfold, you’ll likely feel right at home among us.
Rooms range from $140–$245 per week depending on size, plus $30 for shared expenses and $35 for communal meals. We’re right in the city centre, a short walk from Hagley Park.
